Trimethoprim is a sulfamethoxazole and sulfonamide combined oral suspension that acts on immune cells to prevent them from producing antibodies against bacteria. Trimethoprim is absorbed through the gut wall, reaching the small intestine three times a day. In adults, SMZ-TMP is administered intravenously or orally. Trimethoprim is not absorbed by the stomach or intestine. The half-life of SMZ-TMP is 2 to 3 hours, but the benefits of SMZ-TMP for the treatment of various bacterial infections may last up to 12 hours. SMZ-TMP capsules and tablets are for oral administration.
